As passionate microbiologists, we all want our students to really understand the foundational concepts that underlie microbiology. We want our students to THINK and not just memorize facts-- often easier said than done.  Educational research has shown that students learn more effectively when they interact with the information, so they can connect new material to what they already know.  To be effective educators, we should be actively engaging our students by providing frequent and authentic opportunities to reflect on and wrestle with the content.  What might this look like in your classroom? This session will explore a continuum of active learning strategies designed to fit any instructor and any classroom, to help engage students in deeper learning.

Learning outcomes:  After this presentation, participants should be able to

- Describe evidence that shows that engaging students improves learning

- Develop a continuum of active learning strategies to engage students in the classroom
